Tsetse flies trophic behaviour

Tsetse flies, the biological vector of human and African trypanosomiasis in West Africa, may be able to learn from their past feeding experiences.

In experimental conditions, when given the choice between cattle and reptiles hosts, flies were more likely to return to the same hosts they had fed on 2 days earlier.

This may have important consequences on the inter- vs. intra-species transmssion of trypanosomes.
